Charleston Battery’s MD Myers earns Player of the Week after recording hat trick in Southern Derby

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week for Week 17 of the 2024 regular season on Tuesday, with Charleston Battery forward MD Myers voted the Championship Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball after he recorded his second hat trick across all competitions this season in the Battery’s 5-2 victory against Southern Derby rival North Carolina FC.

An offseason acquisition from New York City FC II, the 23-year-old helped lead the Battery out of a four-game goalless drought as it racked up all five goals in the second half at Patriots Point. With his side trailing by a pair of goals at halftime, he began the comeback in the 58th minute with a sharp finish inside the penalty area, and then provided the go-ahead goal in the second minute of stoppage time with a calm lifted finish after a good through-ball by Arturo Rodriguez.

Myers then set up Jackson Conway for the Battery’s fourth before he was brought down in the box soon after, giving him the chance to complete his hat trick from the penalty spot. The contest marked the first time the Battery had recorded five goals in the second half of a contest in the USL Championship era and added to Myers’ hat trick against South Georgia Tormenta FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in May.

“Scored five goals so, back to winning ways, it feels great,” said Myers after the contest. “We have had a lot of unlucky breaks the last couple of games, and we keep working every day in practice. We had a really good week and we trusted it was going to come.”

Myers earned 55 percent of the ballot to claim the award. Loudoun United FC goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux finished second on 27 percent after recording a seven-save shutout in his side’s 2-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Rowdies that saw the French shot-stopper register a -1.96 Goals Prevented mark.

The Championship’s Player of the Week is selected by the USL National Media Panel, which is made up of representatives from each media market in the Championship.
