Success while remaining true to principles, squad’s willingness to work for each other offered silver lining to defeat in Los Angeles

There’s no getting around it – losing is no fun.

As proud as New Mexico United’s players and fans were at the end of Wednesday night’s 3-1 defeat to Los Angeles FC at BMO Stadium in the Quarterfinals of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – where the multiple sections of yellow-clad supporters remained until well after the final whistle and drew plaudits from the home fans – it was still the end of the aim the club had this season to go further than it had five years ago.

When the dust settles, however, there will be plenty that United will gain from competing against a club currently rated in the Top 10 in North America per Concacaf’s rankings.

  • STEPPING FORWARD: United remained resolute in the approach it has sought since Head Coach Eric Quill took over, taking on LAFC’s high pressure as it played into positive situations with a structure that saw the side set itself up for the next three moves to create positive situations. The speed at which New Mexico needed to execute against an LAFC front six that featured five of the six midfielders and attackers that started in El Trafico last week against the LA Galaxy was a step up, and the players for the most part rose to the moment.

If there’s one big thing New Mexico should take away from the game, it’s that time is of the essence. If you’ve gained territory there’s no time for consolidation to allow the opponent to reorganize, as happened regularly when the front six’s pressure had been navigated. Take that forward into the second half of the USL Championship season and there’s more success to be had.

  • DEFENSIVELY DILIGENT: If you had to pick out a backline star for United, center back Anthony Herbert would be the one, but every player stuck to their task diligently. LAFC’s quality in the final third showed why it’s currently on top of the Western Conference, but on the opening two goals the saves Alex Tambakis made were unfortunate to result in rebound opportunities the hosts gobbled up, even though Timmy Tillman certainly seems to have a knack for being positioned well to get those opportunities.

Whenever New Mexico had to scramble, everyone was up to the task. See Jacobo Reyes making a full sprint to help ward off a first-half chance from Mateusz Bogusz off a United first-half corner kick that resulted in an LAFC counterattack, or the nod of respect Flanagan got from LAFC leading scorer Denis Bouanga after one of their regular tussles. United works for each other in the way the best teams do. That’s a key part of the foundation their success is built on.
  • EARNING RESPECT: While LAFC Head Coach Steve Cherundolo thought there were areas where his side could have been better in its performance, he also voiced a level of respect for what United brought to the table in his postgame press conference.

“New Mexico is quite a complete squad,” said Cherundolo. “Physicality is definitely there, tactical discipline and the ability to threaten an opponent’s goal. [It’s] no surprise that they’re in first place, absolutely.”

New Mexico is in first place in the Championship’s Western Conference – and got this far in the Open Cup – because as a side it understands what it is and what it wants to accomplish. From old heads like Daniel Bruce and Alex Tambakis to the newcomers brought in by Head Coach Eric Quill this offseason, New Mexico is arguably as complete a side and squad as it’s ever been, and that’s reflected in its results. Hearing that from one of the top coaches in MLS should bolster the side’s belief.

With this weekend off in the Championship before it returns home to face Birmingham Legion FC on July 20, there will be time to reflect on the good and the bad from Wednesday night before focus switches to what’s next.

There should be little doubt, though, that New Mexico can – and probably will – come out on the other side a better team than it entered.
